Entertaiment is the state of being entertained. It encompasses many forms of activity such as music, reading, sports, games, and visual arts, to name a few. The goal of entertainment is to provide pleasure and amusement, resulting in relaxation or even escapism from the world around us. The word entertaiment is derived from the Latin inter-tenere, the prefix inter meaning “inside” and tenir from the root tenere, which means to hold, originating from the Indo-European ten, meaning to stretch. The suffix -ment is a common suffix of English verb stems such as amazement, betterment, and merriment.
The purpose of entertainment is to relieve stress, improve health, and increase happiness. It can also be a form of catharsis, which is the purging of negative emotions such as anxiety or depression.
