The Daily News

The Daily News is a New York City newspaper founded in 1873 and one of the nation’s most respected, influential papers. Daily News award-winning writers and columnists bring you the very best live coverage of national and local news, New York exclusives and politics. The Daily News also covers the Yankees, Mets and Giants like no other paper, plus entertainment and celebrity gossip.

The paper has been known to break major news stories, such as the 1975 story that claimed Mayor John Lindsay had smuggled drugs into the city. It is famous for its tabloid format, flamboyant headlines and front-page photos. The Daily News has long been locked in a circulation battle with the rival New York Post, and its once-soaring circulation numbers have been on a steady decline since their mid-20th century peak.

Since the paper was purchased by cost-slashing hedge fund Alden Global Capital last year, many of its top staffers have left in the wake of a series of buyouts and layoffs. The company has vowed to return the Daily News to profitability, and it has recently begun to make big investments in technology and its website.

Among the earliest daily newspapers to feature regular photographs, the Daily News was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a large staff of photographers. It also emphasized political wrongdoing and social intrigue, including the love triangle between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. The Daily News continued to include intense city news coverage, classified ads, comics and a sports section, in addition to its strong opinion and politics sections.

The Yale Daily News is published every day during the academic year when Yale is in session and is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. Its editors and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver and Strobe Talbott.
